Introduction

Alexander III of Macedon (356 - 323 BC), popularly known as Alexander the Great, was a king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. By the age of 30, he had created one of the largest empires in history, stretching from Greece to northwestern India. He remained undefeated in battle and is considered one of history's greatest military commanders.

Early Life and Education

Alexander was born to King Philip II and Queen Olympias. At the age of 13, his father hired the great philosopher Aristotle to be his tutor. Aristotle taught him rhetoric, literature, science, and philosophy, which deeply influenced Alexander's vision of spreading Greek culture across the world.

Conquest of the Persian Empire

After his father's assassination in 336 BC, Alexander took the throne. His most famous achievement was the invasion of the Persian Empire. He defeated King Darius III in a series of legendary battles, including the Battle of Issus and the Battle of Gaugamela, eventually becoming the King of Persia himself.

Campaign in India

In 326 BC, Alexander crossed the Indus River and invaded India. He fought the famous Battle of the Hydaspes against King Porus. Although Alexander won, he was so impressed by Porus's bravery that he allowed him to continue ruling his kingdom as an ally. However, his exhausted army refused to go further east, forcing Alexander to turn back.

Death and Legacy

Alexander died in Babylon in 323 BC at the young age of 32. While the cause of his death remains a mystery (fever or poisoning), his legacy lived on through the Hellenistic Period. He founded more than 20 cities bearing his name, the most famous being Alexandria in Egypt.
